So here is the new website and welcome to you all who may enter, I do hope you find it useful and return often. Here’s a little run down of what’s going on in no particular order.
Within these pages you will of course find a library of recipes that, like pearl barley, will swell in volume over time. They can be searched by ingredient or the four seasons. There are recipes for all time limitations or lack of them. We all have the time to cook! We sleep for eight hours, we work for eight hours and that still leaves us with eight hours.
If you want to zoom in, so to speak, on a particular ingredient please find the seasonal calendar. This categorizes most fish meat, vegetables, fruits and small selection of wild things and mushrooms growing in the UK into a month by month chart showing their first appearance, peek time and fade out. I hope this will encourage passionate affairs with particular ingredients while their seasonal skirts are lifted or trousers pulled down. Cooking often with the same ingredient while it’s in season urges the cook to be inventive and enjoy variations on a theme, to avoid boredom, before the next treat pops up from the ground or is shot from the sky.
There is also a directory of things I’ve come across over the years and want to share. I guess that’s the point really, sharing so that all prosper. The ‘gesture of exchange’ is an important cog in the world’s clockwork, one that I particularly like. Please find, suppliers, blankets, knives, outdoor coats, fishing rods, hotels, beauty spots, drinks, interesting companies and the like.....and pass them on if you see fit.
Every quarter there will be a sort of virtual tombola, for those who sign their addresses into our newsletter section - resulting in one overall winner. Rest assured the prize will be real maybe something from my travels in the UK or outside of it. It could be it a knife, cook book, thimble from Coventry, Saami wooden cup, kangaroo testicle wallet or a bottle of special chilli sauce made by yours truly. As you won’t know what the prize is it’s a lucky dip but you won’t feel swizzed........I hope.
Kitchen beets. I thought I was being a trail blazer by including playlists on my site but the smirk evaporated on realising I am one of the last to cross the finish line. Where have I been? The woods, most likely. The airwaves awash with teen spirit I wanted to offer a place to hide by updating the sight fortnightly with a new 10-track playlist of my own questionable music taste. I’ve chosen songs that go well with a glass of cider and plenty of beans to top. l hope you enjoy my cherry picked hotch-potch selections. The occasional rowdy number is a nod towards a post dinner bop or otherwise alert you of my impending mid life crisis.
I will update my blog when possible with a concerted effort in mind not too leave it too long. If it does seem ages call the police but bearing in mind I could be away. Entries could be food related thoughts, arguments I’m having with myself, stories from any excursions and maybe even a few fishing frolics. Blogs are a useful storage ground to create space in the mind for the new.
Here I would like to thank AB design for their thought and design concerning this website. I thoroughly recommend them.
I will leave you to turn over any remaining stones and see what else is to be found here .Cook as much as you can. Remember that mistakes are as valuable as successes. Shop like a Europe, basket underarm. Have fun. Send your messages into the cosmos. Get outside and go nuts.
